Prof. Dr. Hasan Mohammad Mostofa Afroz is a distinguished academic leader and scholar with over 25 years of experience in higher education, research, and institutional management. Currently serving as a Professor and former Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Gazipur, Bangladesh, he has made significant contributions to teaching, research, and community engagement. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he holds a key position as a Director on the Board of Directors of Northwest Power Generation Company Limited, a government-owned entity. His areas of expertise include energy engineering, thermal engineering, refrigeration and air conditioning, and carbon capture technologies. Dr. Afroz's academic journey includes a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from Saga University, Japan, completed in 2013. He earned his Ph.D. from the same university in 2008. He holds an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from BUET, Dhaka, achieving first-class honors in 2004, and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from RUET, Rajshahi, where he also graduated with first-class honors and secured second position in 1998. Throughout his career, Dr. Afroz has held several key positions at DUET, including Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Director of the Institute of Energy Engineering, and Head of multiple departments such as Mechanical, Materials & Metallurgical, Chemical & Food, and Industrial & Production Engineering. He has also served as a member of the syndicate and finance committees, playing a pivotal role in institutional governance and policy-making. His research accomplishments are extensive and include leading projects like the development of PCM-based hybrid mini cold storage funded by the World Bank and the design of solar-operated air-conditioning systems supported by UGC Bangladesh. His work in carbon capture focuses on utilizing captured CO₂ to neutralize alkaline wastewater in textile industries, reducing dependence on chemical acids. He has also explored energy efficiency improvements in Bangladesh's textile industry and collaborated with international institutions such as the University of Alabama, Queensland University of Technology, and Saga University. Dr. Afroz has authored over 48 peer-reviewed articles published in high-impact journals and international conferences. His research focuses on advanced energy systems, refrigerants, thermal energy storage technologies, and carbon capture applications. He is a reviewer for prestigious journals, including ASME and the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Afroz has received numerous awards, such as the President's Award from Saga University in 2008 and multiple Best Presentation Awards from the Japan Society of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers and other international conferences. He is a sought-after speaker, having delivered lectures on energy efficiency, HVAC systems, and sustainable engineering practices in various international workshops. Dr. Afroz is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) and a member of professional bodies like the Bangladesh Society of Mechanical Engineers (BSME) and the Japan Society of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (JSRAE). His dedication to academic excellence, research innovation, and sustainable development has significantly enhanced DUET's global reputation and societal impact.
